SPITFIRES OPEN WITH VICTORY
The Spitfires opened their league campaign with an emphatic 8-1 win over Tetbury Town. The game had added spice as it saw Spitfires new signing Jordan Hodges playing against his old team.
The game started at a high tempo and it wasn't long before Jordan was welcomed back with a crunching foul by Tetbury. He got up dusted himself down and got on with the game.
Tetbury had the first chance and Harry Prescott had to alert to make a good block. With ten players in the squad manager Terry Wilcox made regular changes and it was after his first that Slimbridge took the lead. Substitute Ollie Furneaux running through the defence to score after good work by Joe Oliver. Oliver himself got on the scoresheet two minutes later with a cool finish from a George Mack pass.
Tetbury got back into the game after a long goal kick. Harry Prescott delayed coming out to meet it and he was beaten to the ball by the Tetbury forward. The Spitfires though pushed forward again with captain Ethan Wait outstanding in defence. Jordan Hodges grabbed the goal he wanted just before half time with a low shot.
More changes at half time saw Slimbridge with fresh legs and it was Joe Wilcox who extended the lead almost from the restart with the goal of the game. He passed three players before shooting into the corner.
At 4-1 Tetbury started to slow down and it wasn't long before Jack Matthews grabbed a fifth. Oliver and Hodges scored again before Ryan Ponting wrappes up the scoring with a superb run and shot.
Ryan Ponting and Joe Oliver were named Men of the Match.
