SPITFIRES BEAT FOREST GREEN TO CLOSE IN ON TITLE
Slimbridge Spitfires 1 Forest Green Rovers 0
The Spitfires produced one of their best displays of the season to beat Forest Green and in doing so leave themselves the target of just one more win to secure the title.
Forest Green got off to the better start and Slimbridge goalkeeper Harry Prescott produced two outstanding saves to keep the score level. After ten minutes the Spitfires started to take control with George Mack and Ollie Furneaux both testing the Forest Green keeper.
Slimbridge took the lead seven minutes from half time. Ollie Furneaux produced a great run down the right and his cross was coolly turned in by Joe Wilcox.
As the half came to an end Forest Green had a shot handballed on the line by a Slimbridge defender. The referee blew the whistle and although the subsequent follow up shot crept over the line, the decision for the penalty was already given. In a moment of high tension, the penalty taker struck the ball well, but Harry Prescott made a tremendous save down to his left.
The second half saw Slimbridge pile on the pressure for a second goal and George Mack was unlucky to see his header from a Joe Oliver cross go just over. Jordan Hodges also went close on several occassions.
In defence, once again Sam Crosby and Ryan Ponting were not to be beaten and Slimbridge comfortably held on. The Spitfires will win the league if they beat Wickwar on Wednesday night.
Men of the Match were Joe Oliver and Harry Prescott.
