SPITFIRES OPEN SEASON IN SENSATIONAL FASHION
Forest Green Rovers 2 Slimbridge Spitfires 7
The Spitfires got their defence of the league title off to the perfect start with a comprehensive win over last years runners up Forest Green Rovers.
From the very start Slimbridge were on top and were first to every ball. The movement was first class and the chances came thick and fast in the early stages. Ten minutes in and a corner from the right was headed in by Jordan Hodges. The second came soon after when Ollie Furneaux broke clear and slotted home.
Forest Green tried to come back into the match, but Harry Prescott made a great save from a powerful free kick. Slimbridge reasserted themselves and Ollie Furneaux scored again after great work by Joe Oliver on the right. The fourth came just before half time when George Mack scored from close range. He added another just as the half time whistle blew.
The second half saw Forest Green try to reclaim some pride and they scored twice quickly after the break. However, the Spitfires spurred on by defenders Ryan Ponting and Sam Crosbee were determined not to concede again. Joe Wilcox and Jamie Eyles were brought on to make things more secure and new signing Reece Chambers led the line up front very well.
Jordan Hodges scored a great individual goal to make it six before Joe Oliver deservedly got his goal to make it a magnificent seven.
