SPITFIRES MAINTAIN INPRESSIVE FORM

Slimbridge Spitfires 7 Thornbury Falcons 1

The Spitfires maintained their great start to the season with a brilliant 7-1 win over Thornbury Falcons at St. Johns Road. The win was all the sweeter as Thornbury were the only league team that the Spitfires failed to beat last season.

Thornbury had an early attack in the game, but it was Slimbridge who took the lead with a training ground move. A short corner was played to George Mack who rifled a shot into the top corner.

Slimbridge continued to dominate playing some great football with Ollie Furneaux going close on one occassion. However, it was Thornbury who got the next goal. A hopeful shot into the area deceived goalkeeper Harry Prescott who tried to pick it up on the half volley. Unfortunately the ball spun out of his control and went over the line.

The Spitfires kept their heads up and continued to play some great stuff and they went back into the lead five minutes before half time when Jordan Hodges forced his way past the defender and put an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. The Spitfires then got a crucial goal right on half time when Joe Oliver crossed for George Mack to score his second.

The second half saw Kelvin Hiles come on up front and he got into the game straight away. Jordan Hodges passed across the face of goal and Kelvin was at the far post to make it 4-1.

Thornbury tried to rally and get back into the game, but were denied by some great defending by Joe Wilcox and Ryan Ponting. The Spitfires by now were playing their best football of the season and went further in front when Jordan Hodges produced a cracking shot from outside the area which flew into the top corner.

Jordan completed his hat trick soon after with a neat finish from a George Mack corner. Ryan Ponting got on the scoresheet next with a deflected shot.

Thornbury never gave up and it took a great diving save from Harry Prescott to deny them another goal. In the end the Spitfires were worthy winners and if they keep this form up they will have a great season.

Men of the Match were Ryan Ponting and George Mack.
