Club Tournaments

The hottest day of the year marked a festival of fantastic football. 40 teams from as far as South Wales and  Somerset bringing  360 players converged onto a Slimbridge Recreation ground bathed in sunshine. Everyone was greeted by temperatures soaring towards 30C with thankfully a slight breeze. It was not only a good day for the ice cream van, BBQ and the British Legion bar, but an excellent day for Slimbridge U10s as they won this event for the first time after 3 previous attempts. Slimbridge Under 8s (see picture of Joe Willcox U8s winning a challenge) didn't make the finals, but played some good football, nevertheless all of the teams had a great day out in the sunshine.
The club are pleased to announce they made record profits from the event this year, all money going towards the running costs of the teams aged under 7s to under 16s.
The 2007 trophies were awarded to the following teams.
  • Under 8s Winners - Bitton AFC   Runners Up - FC Lakeside   Fair Play Trophy - St Marks Saints

SYFC Chairman Nick Franks said "The standard of refereeing was superb, as well as encouraging the youngsters they were very professional He added

"Thanks to Andy Johnson and Terry Willcox the BBQ was a roaring success, John Lewis overlooked a very novel bouncy castle. A special mention for Vice Chairman Ian Bell and Club Secretary Dave Penlington who masterminded the complex results and league tables from 9.30am to 6.30pm and made the whole event run on time and so smoothly. Not forgetting the car parking marshalled by Kevin Matthews which made St Johns Road 'congestion free' with nearly 1000 people attending the event throughout the day".

Tony Cornock Commercial Manager said " The success of any event is based on a format that works! This year we have surpassed our own expectations and confidently look ahead to a 5th annual tournament next August. The  benchmark has already been set after a lot of hard work has been channelled into this event by a small group of dedicated people, they deserve credit. As far as the players are concerned all the players had a great day out, we even had several families re arranging holidays around this event, so not to miss it!, that alone is justification and an inspiration"
